There are several types of south American Cichlids that would be great for your tank. Firemouths are one, as are Gold Severums, jewel cichlids in a small group, even a single small type of pike cichlid, such as a 2 spot pike or a Jack Dempsey. I would suggest you google images of south American cichlids and look for various fish in the 7-9" range for a single specimen or about 5" if you want a pair.

Gold ceverums start small, and get to be a good sized fish. Pretty eazy to care for too.
is this a tall or a long tank? some fish need more swimming room...
could keep cichlids for a while but they will grow...
Shark is out they need 100 gals min.
You could get a fish that looks like a shark but isn't and they are like 2 to 3 inches long and if you wanted a school you could have probaly 10 and they are about 2 bucks and can go with about any fish. Or try a few gouramis they are semi aggressive and about 5 would fit
I am assuming you are looking for some less common community fish. I would recommend gouramis, loaches, African dwarf frogs, African Butterfly fish, Knight goby, Bumble goby, Rainbow shark, SIAMESE NOT CHINESE Algae Eater,Marbled Hatchet Fish, Silver Hatchet Fish, Rams, Kribensis, Cockatoo cichlid, and bristlenose plecos, and paradise fish. Now of course you couldn't keep all of these fish/ aquatic species in the same tank, but choose some you like and do research to see if they are compatible.
Here are the fish listed above with a link about care/ pics of the fish.

Your tank is just the right size for either a red tailed shark or a rainbow shark if you want to get a shark. You could get one of those (only one) and mix in some other schooling fish. I know you said not tetras but there are many types of tetras that would be fine sharing a tank with one of the sharks I mentioned. You could try, black phantom tetras, black widow tetras, lemon tetras or serpae tetras, to name just a few. If not tetras then how about rasboras. Harlequin rasboras will be fine in a school of 10 or 12 and living with one of those sharks. You could even keep a school of danios in your tank with your shark. Check out the link below for some profiles on the fish I mentioned and feel free to email me if you have any questions. I currently have a 20 gallon tank with a rainbow shark and a mix of 12 harlequin rasboras and hengel's rasboras.
i think you should get some blue rams i had a friend mix blue rams with yellow labs.three months ago..
i go in touched with them today says the cichlids are doing great and healthy
even though they are from different places weird huh.
good luck
